The Altamaha stretches for 137 miles from Jeff Davis County to McIntosh. It is mostly an undisturbed river and has been called many names, including "the Little Amazon." (Altamaha Riverkeeper)
The Altamaha offers access to many past times. Fishermen line its shores and float down its winding path looking for the game fish found there. It's a great place for bird watchers as well as it hosts an abundance of aviary species including waterfowl, owls, woodpeckers and more. One cannot enjoy the Altamaha without hearing the beautiful symphony of the songbirds, amphibians and humming crickets. Many canoe down the serene river just to soak in the beauty of tree-lined shores and listen to the beautiful music produced by the river.
Those who live along its boundary cultivate an outdoor culture of water sports including fishing, swimming, boating and skiing. Hunting is also a popular sport as the wetlands and natural forests provide a near-perfect habitat for the wildlife. You can even participate in annual events on the river hosted by Wayne County.
